Blowfish Power Way to 1st Win

The Columbia Blowfish earned their first victory of the summer with a 10-5 win over the Wilmington Sharks Friday night in front of 1,194 fans at Capital City Stadium. A three run sixth inning and a four run eighth led the way for the Blowfish.

Wilmington (2-1) struck first by knocking Columbia starter Patrick Sullivan out of the game with a three-run third inning. Jesse Bosnik singled to score Greg Bachman and Curt Courtwright. Three batters later, Drew Wingo plated Andrew Guerra with another RBI single to make it 3-0 Wilmington. Jeremiah Meiners then came in from the bullpen for Columbia and struck out Alex Hill to escape the inning.

The Blowfish answered with a run in the fourth as Branfry Arias scored Matt Leeds with an RBI single to make it 3-1. The Blowfish added three more in the 6th inning as Leeds singled, then reached second base on an error by Sharks' left fielder Christian Overstreet.

Oliver Santos moved Leeds to third with a double, and Leeds scored on Shawn Glover's single into right field, followed shortly afterwards by Santos as Arias reached on an error by Wilmington's shortstop. Arias then stole second , and took third after Sharks' catcher Kolby Epley made an errant throw to score Glover, giving the Blowfish a 4-3 lead.

Columbia added two more in the 7th to make it 6-3. Wilmington had two chances to turn a double play to escape the inning unscathed, but Leeds and Santos each earned an RBI as they beat out the throw to first.

Wilmington scored two in the eighth to close the gap 6-5. Hill sacrificed to score Adam Eggemeyer and Bachman followed with an RBI double. The Sharks had a chance to tie the game with the bases loaded and two outs, but Columbia pitcher Drew Mahaffey struck out the next batter to escape further damage.

The Blowfish scored four runs in the bottom of the inning to seal the win. Meiners earned the win in relief for Columbia. Kyle Smith suffered the loss for Wilmington. Mahaffey earned the save.
