Tobs hang on to beat Blowfish 1-0, in 10 innings

Columbia, S.C.- Twenty-four hours after the Blowfish (13-12) took a 1-0 victory in Wilson, the Tobs avenged the loss in the same way but in extras at Capital City Stadium on Sunday night. This time though the teams needed 10 innings to score the lone run, thanks to Jared Richmond's (Tusculum) RBI double. Wilson (18-9) wins the season series at 7-5. The two teams could possibly meet in day two of the Petitt Cup later this week.

Columbia starter Justin Hopper (South Carolina), making his first start, threw a one-hitter in seven innings of work. The Lexington, S.C. native had only thrown 6.1 innings all summer before tonight. On the other side, Alex Meyer (Georgetown) was winless in his three starts for the Tobs. Meyer also pitched masterfully, going nine innings, with nine strikeouts and surrendering four hits.

Richmond's game winning hit was set up in the tenth, with a one out hit from Chris Henderson (George Mason) against reliever Corey Deering (Francis Marion). Chris McGhee (LSU) then grounded in a fielder's choice, ending up on first with two down. Richmond's hit landed down the right field line, scoring McGhee from first.

The Blowfish had a chance to tie in the bottom of the tenth, but Jesse Harmon (Presbyterian) was thrown out at the plate to end the game. Meyer (1-3) ended up with the win, though he left with the game tied. Deering (1-1) lasted 1.1 innings, and was charged with the games only run. Brandon Brinson (Barton) worked the bottom of the ninth, registering his third save. Blair Carson (Anderson) led the 'Fish at the plate with a ¾ performance.

Columbia will play their last regular season home game on Monday night against the Wilmington Sharks at 7:05pm. Capital City Stadium and the Blowfish will honor those in attendance for "Fan Appreciation Night." Wilson returns home for their season finale as they host the Florence Redwolves at 7:05pm.

Capital City Stadium and the Columbia Blowfish will host the 2008 Petitt Cup on August 7th-9th. The end of the season tournament will feature ten games and eight playoff caliber teams. Single game tickets and tournament package tickets are now available at www.blowfishbaseball.com or by calling 803-254-FISH.
